Are you a peacock in a world of penguins?

Are you restless, fast-moving, a problem-solver bursting with ideas?

Do people tell you that you’re all over the place, and  need to settle down and concentrate?

Do you sometimes feel that you make people uncomfortable, that you don’t quite fit in and are not quite accepted?

A client of mine recently put it beautifully:

“We are peacocks in a world of penguins”

We are hungrily waiting to be admired for our difference by those who can’t even recognise us for what we are.

So what to do about it?

Simply put, you can either try to squelch your differences, hide those turquoise feathers under sober grey outer coverings or own them, and the enrichment that being an independent thinker has brough you.

That may feel like it’s easier said than done. After all, you have responsibilities, a living to earn and environment that you have to fit into.

But sooner or later those peacock feathers may start to itch under their drab coverings, or even stick out, and you tell yourself,” This is not how I want to end up”.

But then  how do you want to end up, and how to get there? When all is said and done, what do you want to have done and been?

There is probably more room in your life for those peacock feathers than you think. A good coach can help you talk through your alternatives, your blocks and your blind spots, like an electrician, feeling gently along the line for the fault. Just what is it that most needs to change? Where are the sparks that could most easily be developed? Find someone who believes in you fully and start to build a life that really work for you.

You may be a peacock existing in a world of penguins, but the savvy penguins will realise they need your glow to light up their dreary winters
